Benedict Arnold Facts and Contributions

Benedict Arnold came from Norwich City. He became a part of the American Colony when he was in Connecticut. On his younger years, he lived with his five sisters and brothers. Life was hard for them way back then that a sister of him died because of yellow fever. This was the case even if his father was still a businessman. Their family’s fortune was put into nothingness as the patriarch of the family became addicted to drinking. These were the common Benedict Arnold facts.

When he was still a kid, Arnold was sent to a private school. This was during the time when his father was beginning to lose his money. Because of this, young Arnold was forced to quit his academics. Afterwards, he became an apprentice at an apothecary. It was in the year 1759 when his mother died. His father passed away in 1761.

It cannot be denied that his career took off when he was still a part of the apothecary. As that transpired, he also turned out to be a bookseller. Since then, he worked really hard. This contributed to him becoming a known merchant. He pioneered to branch out his endeavors. He bravely invested on a trading company. During this time, he venture with Adam Babcock, his partner. Stamp Act tax was imposed because of him. This was then observed on most colonies. This triggered his sense in patriotism. He joined the Sons of Liberty afterwards.

The Revolutionary War began. This was the time when Arnold became the Connecticut militia captain. He was in-charged in leading. This was from Boston to Lexington and then all the way to Concord Battles. He intended to help the siege of Boston. This led him to receiving the order of the colonel to attack Fort Ticonderoga. He did this with the presence of Ethan Allen. The Green Mountain Boys were also present. He decided to pursue Ticonderoga and it happened to be a part of his victories.

Arnold played a role in the Continental army. At that juncture, it was still under George Washington. Because he was still the colonel during this time, Quebec City was attacked. He initiated the effort. The Americans were defeated. Since the battle was too fatal, Arnold was left with a wounded leg. Even if this transpired, no one stopped Arnold to take higher leaps as he was promoted the brigadier general of their troops.

A hero. This was how Arnold was perceived because of the Battle of Saratoga. He courageously led the attack of the British. Again, he was wounded. This was the reason why he was forced to go back to their army who was situated in Valley Forge. He was welcomed by most soldiers with their arms open. In his entire journey, he earned enemies though. This was also the case when he was still in the Congress. This was also true when he was in the Continental army. This normally happens and he was able to survive this with his credibility intact.

Cesar Chavez Facts – A Glimpse of his Timeline

Cesar Chavez was born way back on the 31st of March, 1927. His hometown was located in Yuma, Arizona. He came from a Mexican-American family who was considered poor at that time. They had to manage a grocery store, farm, pool hall and garage in order to make a living. It was in the year 1938 though when his family was suddenly evicted from the land they were inhibiting. As this occurred, they lost their livelihood. This transpired during that of the Great Depression. This was the time when they turned out to be a migrant farm workers. They worked in California and Arizona. These were some of the basic Cesar Chavez facts.

There was a point in the life of Chavez in 1942 when he had to quit grammar school. He had to do this not because he could not fathom anything from the class but because he had to work in a full-time basis in the fields assigned to his family. After four years though, this was in the year 1946, Chavez immediately enlisted in the Navy. He had to serve there for almost two years and this was directed towards the Pacific.

Chavez decided to get married in 1948 with Helen Favela. For most of the years they were together, they were really happy and they were blessed with eight children. This was the time when Chavez started working as the ranch hand. He was also situated in a lumber yard during these days which was found in San Jose, Calif.

Another endeavor was taken by Chanvez in 1952. He joined the CSO or the Community Service Organization during the said time. This was again located in San Jose, Calif. He turned out to be an organizer for the Mexican American community. He spearheaded the drive for voter registration. The same was also true for fighting economic and racial discrimination. In 1958, Chavez was assigned executive director of CSO. He then moved to the headquarter of CSO which was located in Los Angeles.

In 1962, Chavez stumbled upon the National Farm Workers Association or the NFWA. This was still in Delano, Calif. This was with a labor leader named Dolores Huerta. Basically, the mentioned organization was meant to hold the rights of the migrant workers high. This included the minimum wage, collective bargaining and insurance. All of these were checked and studied by Chavez of course.

The NFWA was composed of Mexican Americans. In 1965, the AWOC or the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee was made part of the NFWA. This was also partaken by Filipino Americans who then started to have a strike against that of the grape growers in the Delano. This took off the five-year grape strike in the said place. As this occurred, a lot of attention was given. This was the instance when Chavez advocated boycotts, picketing, strikes and even marches. The same was also true for non-violent means of achieving the aims of the union. This was anchored with the philosophy of the Gandhian.

Dr. Richard Beliveau: Lignans in Foods Reduce Breast Cancer 20%

Noted Canadian cancer researcher Dr. Richard Beliveau wrote in a column in many Canadian papers that women significantly reduce risk of breast cancer by eating foods containing chemical compounds called lignans.

“By examining the results of 13 (recent) studies looking at post-menopausal women, the group most at risk of developing breast cancer,” Dr. Beliveau wrote. “Researchers found women who ate the most foods containing lignans had a cancer risk 20% lower than the women who ate few lignan-containing foods.”

Flax Seed Has High Cancer Fighting Lignan Concentration

Whether post-menopausal or not that 20% number is clearly good news for women. Eating foods with lignans is vital, he suggests, and when women learn there are many common foods containing lignans they will realize how simple it is to add more to their diet.

Dr. Beliveau, who holds the Chair for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at Université du Québec à Montréal and has researched cancer for more than 20 years, points out that lignans are found in a variety of everyday fruits, vegetables and grains. Incredibly flax seed registers lignan levels “up to 3,000 times higher than other plant products.”

Stop Hormones Binding to Breast Cells

As the doctor explains when the level of estrogens, female sex hormones, get too high they cause “excessive stimulation of mammary glands” and that causes a greater risk for developing breast cancer. Beliveau said this is called “hormone-dependent breast cancer.”

There are molecules that have a structure very close to that of estrogen called phytoestrogens that, among other things, reduce the amount of female sex hormones in a woman’s blood stream. They also prevent sex hormones from “binding to the surface of the cells in the breast.” Lignans are a form of phytoestrogens.

Flax Seeds, Grains, Vegetables, Fruts, Green Tea – Lignans Easy to Find

Most plants contain lignans but Dr. Beliveau reports the best way to consume them is by eating freshly ground flax seed, which has a massive amount of it, 301,000 micrograms per100 gram serving. Sesame seeds have 39,348 micrograms.

Whole wheat buns and multi-grain breads are high in lignans. Kale, broccoli, garlic, apricots and strawberries are lignan containing foods. Dr. Beliveau points out that Extra Virgin Olive oil has as well and so does red wine and tea.

Factors Combine to Lower Cancer Risk

Research is increasingly finding that exercise and weight control, and stress control, are factors that also help to reduce cancers. But with a 20% reduction in the likelihood of ever developing breast cancer simply by regularly consuming lignan-containing foods doing so becomes an easy and effective way of lowering your risk.
